Tis the season to celebrate the birth of our Savior! What better way to do that, then to dig into His word and re-discover the reason for the season.
I am stealing this from the Good Morning Girls website~
The word Advent means “the waiting on the arrival of something
important” and for us as Christians, it’s waiting on the arrival of the
day we will celebrate the birth of our Savior. Advent is a 4
week preparation time FOR Christmas that focuses on celebrating Christ’s
birth, looking forward to His second coming and finding strength in His
presence in our lives right now. Seeing God in our past, our future and our present. It’s about preparing our hearts and minds on HIM…..the “reason for the season.”
Advent is a deep daily focus on Jesus. Many believe that it is the
deepest form of worship at Christmas..not celebrating Christ’s birth and
life one day but rather for the 4 weeks leading up to Christmas.
I have participated in a couple of the GMG bible studies and I am so excited to dig into this study as we near my favorite holiday! It is a very simple study to participate in, all you need is your bible, the free e-book available at this Link, and four candles! All of the instructions are on that webpage, and the links to the materials you need are there as well.
I am going to be joining my friend Jessica, an amazing Christian woman and mother (who has a fantastic Blog ) and try and post weekly about what I have learned thus far in the study.
I hope you will join along with me as we prepare our hearts for Christmas!!

Thankful
I can't believe it is November already! Where has the time gone? Before we know it there will be snow on the ground and it will be socially acceptable to listen to Christmas music (not that I haven't already started or anything..) I have decided to write a post about thankfulness seeing as though Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and isn't the theme of November thankfulness?

So can you tell I am thankful for my family?!
How about my friends... yep I am REALLY thankful for them! For new friends, for old friends, for work friends, church friends and for school friends. It never ceases to amaze me the impact friends can have on our true happiness in life. I am so thankful for the easy conversations, the shoulders to cry on, the wine drinking partners I have come to call friends, and those ladies who let me steal their babies to fulfill my own baby fever ! They are truly a gift from God and I thank Him everyday for the amazing people he puts in my life.
I swear each friend that I have grown to love has been put in my life for a certain reason. There are some that are put in my life to teach me what it means to be humble, to be kind and caring, putting others needs before themselves. There are friends in my life that teach me to be patient, and to not sweat the little things. I am so blessed to be continually learning from those around me! I am also so thankful to my IG (instagram) friends. Women whom I have not yet met in real life, but who continue to support me in my strife to be a better wife and Christian! There are so many things I still have to learn about being a friend, and I am so THANKFUL to have these people in my life. I am so thankful for my health and for the health of those I love. In my line of work sickness and death are normal occurrences so to be able to say that I am healthy is a true gift from God. I am also thankful for those who are sick, those kids who teach me about myself and my faith just for fighting their own battle. Their courage and happiness despite everything they have been forced to endure, is life changing and I am so thankful to have my life changed everyday I walk into the hospital.
There are so many other things I am thankful for but I will end with one more; I am thankful for my faith in God and my promise of eternity in heaven. There are not enough words to describe my gratitude, nor do I think I can adequately articulate what my faith means me to me or how thankful I am to HAVE faith. There are many people I encounter who do not yet know the Lord, nor have faith in anything other than themselves. I pray that people will come to know the Lord though my actions and the way that I live my life striving to be the best person I can be, living for Him everyday.
So what are you thankful for? I am thankful that you took the time to read my blog and hope that it has blessed you in some way today!

Mission Trip... Whats the point?
**UPDATE: $900 left to raise by January 14th!! Please consider donating or joining me in prayer**
Is a mission trip like a vacation? What are you doing in Africa? Are you going to go on a safari? Why are you building a church in Africa? What's the point in a mission trip? Why are you sponsoring a child in Africa, why don't you just have a kid? Why is it so expensive?
After announcing to my friends and family that I have decided to go on a missions trip to Swaziland Africa, I have gotten many questions like the ones above. So I shall enlighten you to the best of my abilities!
Why Africa? One of my best friends went to Africa last year with church, and all of the stories and experiences she shared with me were AMAZING! When I found out River Valley would be sending two groups in February, I felt the Lord tug at my heart and tell me I need to make this trip a reality. My faith has grown so tremendously in the last year that I KNOW this experience will enhance my spiritual growth, I am so excited to see what the Lord has in store for me.
"Go therefore and make
disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and
of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I
have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the
age.”Matthew 28:19-20
A mission trip is not the same thing as a vacation. To me a mission trip has a main purpose of serving the Lord and spreading his gospel to people who may not know him. In Africa we plan to serve the people of Swaziland by working at in the community, serving the children at care-points and spreading the word to anyone who will listen! I am so excited to share my testimony and my experiences and my beliefs with other people, especially young people. I am also SUPER excited to get to meet some amazing kiddos and teach them about Jesus!!!
I will learn more about what exactly we will be doing once we have a group meeting, but one of the main things we will be doing is opening up a River Valley Church campus! By launching a church in Swaziland, we are giving so many people the opportunity to learn about Christ and to find salvation in their future in his presence. I am so excited to be part of this experience, it is something our church has been praying about for a long time and for it to finally be opening is amazing!
As for the safari... not sure, but I HOPE so!!!
Sponsoring a child has always been something I have wanted to do. Growing up I have never been hungry, I have never not known home, I have always felt safe and provided for. There are so many kids in this world that don't have the security I grew up with and that makes me so sad. It makes me want to do something, which is why we are sponsoring a child! It's totally different than having out own kid, its a way to provide for someone and bless someone we have never even met (yet)!
Why is the trip so expensive? Do you know how expensive it is to fly to Africa!?!? That's why! The cost of this trip includes my airfare, transportation, food and all of our accommodations.
So doesn't it sound amazing?!! Yeah, I think so too...
If my story has inspired you, please feel free to click THIS LINK to donate!
I have deadlines to make and the 1st on is fast approaching, I have to have $1000 raised by Nov. 5th and I am a long ways away from that...
I pray that you the Lord will provide for you like he has for me and that your faith will be influenced by my story and this blog!

Joy Unspeakable
| Val and I before the event started |
I have been trying to start this blog for a few days now and I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around where to take this post! So, my apologizes if it's all over the place!!
This weekend I was given the opportunity to attend Sparkle, a women's conference hosted by my church, River Valley. It was AMAZING! it was my first time attending and I was blown away by the Lord's presence among these women. It was a two day event aiming to empower women in the church and give us a weekend to make new friends within our faith community.
The main speaker for the weekend was Charlotte Gambill of Abundant Life Church in England. She was phenomenal!!! She spoke three different sessions, of which I am going to give you my highlights and take-aways so listen up!
#1: Own It:
Charlotte brought up a concept of owning your zone. Whats a zone you ask? It's anything that you are a part of; your marriage, your home, your workplace, your neighborhood block, your row in church, anything that you take part in you must take ownership of. Many of us go through certain parts in our lives sort of complacent, its always been this way who am I to change it now. What's a little gossip here or there, it can't hurt anything. What's a little arguing in front of your children, they don't know whats going on. Whats a little texting in church, no one will notice. Whats wrong with asking God for something, and getting mad when he doesn't give it to us? Wrong. We need to own our zone, we need to control over the things that are happening in our lives and stop settling for just ok. Because when we settle for just ok once, we will do it again, and before you know it you are unhappy where your life or your relationships are at. We need to fight for things that are important to us, we need to stand up to those people in our lives that are not bringing good to us. I'll give you a personal example, gossip. I love to talk, and I am guilty of gossiping. I know it isn't kind, and I am making an honest effort to stop. However there are certain people in my life that I KNOW bring out the gossiper in me. I know that I need to take a stand and when those conversations come up, I either need to leave the conversation, or make it known that I refuse to talk badly about other people. Another issue I have is swearing. I HATE swearing, it makes you sound immature and I really don't see a point in it. I have made a really conscious effort to completely eliminate it from my vocabulary, and make a point to call people out when they swear in front of me. So in my house there is a no swear rule. Now my husband Chad gets the brunt of my nagging because, on occasion he will let one slip in front of me. But it is my house, and my zone and I am taking control of what is important to me. So friends, we must figure out what is important in our lives and own it, especially in prayer. We must make our requests known to God and make sure he knows we are serious, and it is important to us.
#2: Get Over It!:
This is a hard one. I will be honest, if you have read my previous posts you know I have had a hard time with forgiveness. But it is such an important thing to do, to forgive. For if we don't we are carrying around a grudge that is constantly being fed and it has repercussions on other aspects of our lives. Our anger is not transparent, we can't just turn it off even if we think we can. Our anger can spill into interactions with people who have no idea why you are mad in the first place. I will come home from a crazy awful busy day at work, and I will get made at my husband for something completely irrelevant, like taking the last Diet Coke. My anger from my day at work has nothing to do with him, but I can take it out on him because he took the last soda. That is not ok. We need to recognize when we are getting angry or upset, and be able to let that go before we interact with someone else. If we are holding a grudge because a few months ago a friend said something about me behind me back and this whole time this anger and grudge has gotten bigger and bigger the next time we see that person we are going to be so bitter and unkind and they will have no idea why! So we must get over it. If someone says something wrong about you confront them, and forgive them. If we have a horrible day at work, yell at the steering wheel before you get out of the car so that anger does not get misplaced.
John the Baptist was beheaded because of a grudge, because a woman named Herodias was so upset and couldn't get over what John had done to her. Her daughter was given the opportunity to have anything she wanted, half of King Herod's kingdom even. She went to her mother and asked her what she should wish for, out of anger her mother told her to ask for John the Baptist's head on a platter. (Matthew14)
We have and option in life, we can either forgive and get over it and take the kingdom the Lord has promised us. Or we can have a head. We can continue to feed our grudges and make others lives miserable out of spite and revenge, and that my friends will get us no where. So get over it and move on!
#: Wait for It: God has a strange way of helping us get what we want and need. Sometimes he does it rather quickly, I pray for something and he provides for me. Other times we pray and it seems like he never even heard us. We wait and wait for something to happen and it never does! Personal example, nursing school. I applied for my first time my sophomore year when I was at the UofMN, so 2008. I prayed that this would be right, and I didn't get in. The following year I did the same thing and applied, and didn't get in. At this point I was mad, sad and just grouchy about the whole thing. I decided to just finish my Child Psychology degree and figure it out when I was done. So my senior year, spring of 2010 I sent in a million applications to schools everywhere and FINALLY got in at a community college in Bloomington. I was sooo excited that I had been given this opportunity. Looking back now, I know that the Lord was listening but it just wasn't right. If I would have gotten into nursing school in 2008, there would be no way I would be in the amazing job I have now! It was by personal encounters and good words from friends that I landed in the situation. God just sent me on the long way around. So even when we want an instant answer, we want our miracle, sometimes the timing just isn't right. Charlotte phrased it like this, and it is so right on its scary! When God gives us an instant miracle, we are blessed. When he sends us on the long way around he puts so many other people in our paths, for us to bless, and be blessed on our way to our miracle. I think of all of the people I have encountered in the last 4 years on my long way around and I can't imagine my life without them, God put them into my life to bless me as well as them. So we just need to wait, and have faith that through him all things are made well. He might not always give us the ending we want or expect, but he always gives us the ending we need, we just might not know we needed it.

I am so thankful for this weekend retreat, my life has been changed and to him I give the Glory! I was able to strengthen relationships I already had, and meet some new ladies at church. I even met a woman named Gretchen (1st time in a long time!) and got to steel my new friend Portia's baby for an hour! I know God puts different people in our lives for many reasons, and I'm excited to see where these new friendships go!!
I'm going to leave with some lyrics from a new friends song. Jodi King came and gave our conference a special concert, and blessed our church with her amazing talent all weekend long. I urge you to listen to her video and check out her website, she is truly amazing!
People ask me what I do
Will I live the life I’m given to
And I live my life just where I choose
And where I live is close to you
Will I live the life I’m given to
And I live my life just where I choose
And where I live is close to you
I live a little
I live a lot
We’re all the same
But then we’re not
No matter what the experts say is true
I live for love
I live for you
I live a lot
We’re all the same
But then we’re not
No matter what the experts say is true
I live for love
I live for you
The world keeps turning
And I wonder why
But I’ll keep living
Or else I’ll die
And I wonder why
But I’ll keep living
Or else I’ll die
I don’t know how long I’ll live
But all I’ve got is what I give
So if you’re asking what I do
I live for you
But all I’ve got is what I give
So if you’re asking what I do
I live for you

Grace
"Let us therefor come BOLDLY to the throne of GRACE, that we may find MERCY and GRACE in time of need." ~Hebrews 4:16
GRACE:
a : unmerited divine assistance given humans for their regeneration or sanctification
b : a virtue coming from God
c : a state of sanctification enjoyed through divine grace
MERCY:
a : compassion or forbearance shown especially to an offender or to one subject to one's power; also : lenient or compassionate treatment
Message Translation of Hebrews 4:14-16~
"Now that we know what we
have—Jesus, this great High Priest with ready access to God—let’s not
let it slip through our fingers. We don’t have a priest who is out of
touch with our reality. He’s been through weakness and testing,
experienced it all—all but the sin. So let’s walk right up to him and
get what he is so ready to give. Take the mercy, accept the help."
Take the MERCY, take the compassion, take the forgiveness that he is giving us and give thanks.
Forgiveness is a tricky thing, and one that I am just beginning to fully understand. I am a grudge holder. I have a really hard time letting go of things that others have done to me, when I hurt, I hurt for a long time. I think as humans we were made to hold on to things, to dwell on others faults and shortcomings. As Christians we are taught forgiveness. We are taught that when someone hurts you, you forgive them because we were forgiven. Jesus took our sins and our burdens and carried the weight of the world to his grave. He died so that we could live an eternal life free of sin. He forgave the unforgivable, he endured the unendurable. So why is it so hard to forgive? Why is it so hard to move on when we have been hurt?
Romans 5:20-21~ "Sin didn't and doesn't have a chance in competitions with the aggressive forgiveness we call GRACE. When it is sin versus grace, grace wins hands down. All sin can do is threaten us with death and that's the end of it. Grace, because God is putting everything together again through the Messiah, invites us into life - a life that goes on and one, world without end."
We were shown mercy, shown compassion when we didn't deserve it. We are flawed, the church is flawed, religion is flawed, but Jesus is not. He is perfect. He took the weight of our sin to the grave so that we would be able to live eternity perfect like he was. So even when someone doesn't "deserve" our forgiveness, we have to give it to them because it was given to us. So my challenge to all of you and to myself is to FORGIVE. Give GRACE to those who have done us wrong and move on. Life is too short to hold grudges, it is too short to live in a state of anger. Forgiveness is empowering, it is eye opening!
We are flawed, but he is not...
There's only grace. There's only love
There's only mercy and believe me its enough
Your sins are gone
Without a trace
And there's nothing left now
There's only grace
Your starting over now
Under the sun
Your stepping forward now
A new life has begun
Your new life has begun
There's only mercy and believe me its enough
Your sins are gone
Without a trace
And there's nothing left now
There's only grace
Your starting over now
Under the sun
Your stepping forward now
A new life has begun
Your new life has begun
And if you should fall again
Get back up, get back up
Reach out and take my hand
And get back up, get back up
Get back up again
Ooh get back up again
Get back up, get back up
Reach out and take my hand
And get back up, get back up
Get back up again
Ooh get back up again
